Prom is special; coverage should be, too
The prom story doesn't have to be predictable. Check out this photo essay on fashion and style at the Gibbs High School prom in the St. Petersburg Times.

Or take a look at "A date's not the point" by Letitia Stein, also in the St. Petersburg Times. She focuses on the trend of ditching dates and going with groups of friends. Stein scores excellent quotes, like when a guidance counselor recalls a kid comparing taking a date to prom to bringing a peanut butter sandwich to a banquet. Or when Mike Mellon, 18, admits relief that his date fell through so that he could wear a tangerine tux.

"It wouldn't have worked out anyway, " Mike says of a date with Liz. "I'm orange. She's purple."

Also notice Stein's descriptions:

The teens' outfits are the evening's real decorations -- a rainbow of silky dresses, tasty as lollipops, and suave black and white tuxes.

Find an angle to your prom story -- fashion, dates, drugs, dancing, after-parties, transportation. Don't settle with the stale "It happened, and here are a few pictures."'
