I am returning to the job hunt after working in a totally unrelated field to writing for the past three years. I have done some Web content writing for a nonprofit sports club for the past seven years as well as a short (three-month) job writing news content for a television station.

My educational background consists of a B.A. in journalism and a Webmaster certification. What advice do you have for a 40-something who would like to get into the journalism field either as a Web content writer or at a newspaper or magazine when I don't feel I have tons of experience?

You lack the experience to compete well for straight-reporting positions.

Your Web certification and experience, however, make you something of a standout for online positions. That is a growing employment sector, but as more opportunities come, so will more competition. While you are a step ahead today, you will have to keep learning to hold that lead. A job in online journalism would help.
