When a newspaper advertises that it wants someone with three- to five-years experience and I have more than that, does that mean I won't be considered?

That generally is a minimum-experience level.

For some jobs, however, companies may want to hire a person with less experience whom they can hire for lower wages. In those cases, it is not to your advantage to have a lot of experience.

Often, the right candidate can get the job even though he or she does not have the amount of experience stated in the ad.


Coming Monday: A new freelancer, trying to work her way to a job, has an editor who publishes her work but won't return e-mails and phone calls.
