Romenesko Letters
Kurt Franck quotes the Blade's stylebook: "A dateline is required when the action we are reporting happened outside Toledo, even though we may be covering the event from Toledo. ...We would not use a dateline when we are simply interviewing an out-of-town source for a story we are developing or for a story we are following, as long as the news event is not happening in that town.” Franck notes that on occasion, "a datelined story may contain a byline when the reporter is not in the community where the action took place, such as a telephone interview. But it is imperative for us to let the reader know by the third paragraph that we are reporting the story via telephone."
