Microsoft co-founder Allen seeks buyer for Sporting News

Paul Allen bought The Sporting News from Times Mirror for more than $100 million six years ago. It's now worth $35 million to $40 million, according to one estimate. "They've got a very tough situation," says Jay Kirsch, a veep at AdMedia Partners. "They're fighting two very deep-pocketed companies [owners of Sports Illustrated and ESPN Magazine] who are also very established brands. And their niche as a data provider has been taken on by a lot of online sources."
