Mort Zuckerman's previous bid was in the "low 500" million dollars, reports Newsday. It says Tribune and News Corp. lawyers are continuing to work on a deal that would put Rupert Murdoch in the owner's seat. Tribune CEO Sam Zell understands Murdoch's long-standing interest in Newsday "and would like to please him, if possible," one source says.
> Amy Schatz: Political attacks on the deal could be more of a long-term problem than regulatory hurdles as Murdoch tries to seal the deal. (Wall Street Journal)
> Phil Rosenthal: "Murdoch is the modern Hearst, Pulitzer or even Tribune's McCormick, who had hands-on approaches, outsized ambitions and weren't universally beloved." (Chicago Tribune)
