Romenesko Letters
Glenn Frankel, who took the Washington Post's buyout two years ago, writes after visiting the Mercury News: "The newsroom staff has been reduced by half in the past few years, and everyone agrees it's been an enormous benefit. The paper no longer worries about covering lots of pesky stories that once seemed to take endless time and energy and threatened its readers with information overload. Gone, too, is the anxiety year after year of trying to make the Top 10 list of great American newspapers. And no more over-editing!"
> Just to be clear.... Frankel tells Romenesko in a follow-up e-mail that his visit to the Merc was real, "but my  characterizations -- that everyone's happy there, suffering from less stress and enjoying the increased oxygen supply and silence, etc. -- are pure sarcasm."
