State Journal-Register
The publisher, editor, and managing editor of Gatehouse's State Journal-Register in Springfield Ill. will depart Dec. 14. Each cite personal and professional reasons for their resignations, and say they were reached independently. Publisher Sue Schmitt says: "We did not make this call because of an insider's view of something catastrophic just over the horizon." The paper was acquired early this year by GateHouse Media from longtime owner Copley Press.
> In the SJ-R.com comments: "When positions of this magnitude are vacated, the public has a right to inquire about the professional reasons. This paper has supported personnel disclosures quite openly for others, particularly in state government. As the paper of public record for this area, it should hold itself to the same standard to which it attempts to hold others."
