John Merrill (left) admits he was careless in not naming The Maneater as the source of quotes for a newspaper column, but "I did not lift any sentences or paragraphs from anybody else's writing." The University of Missouri-Columbia journalism professor emeritus says he's "almost traumatized by the recent tempest in a teapot" and notes that he's written and edited more than 30 books "and this is the first time I been accused of plagiarism."
