The cuts -- 80 union and 20 management positions -- represent roughly 25% of the newsroom staff. Michael Cabanatuan, president of the Northern California Media Workers Guild, says management contends the cuts as necessary because the paper is losing substantial funds. Publisher Frank Vega says: "We are not prepared to discuss specifics because it was just a preliminary conversation [with the union]."
