Tim O'Leary, a reporter with Riverside, CA-based Press-Enterprise since 1990, resigned after telling senior editors that he had taken gifts from elected officials -- including a $500 check from one official -- following a 2003 fire that destroyed his home. Two politicians said they made their gifts because they had known O'Leary for a number of years and he needed help.
