Ron Burkle and Eli Broad believe they can avoid layoffs or other cutbacks at the Los Angeles Times and other Tribune papers under their plan. Some are skeptical, including Los Angeles attorney George Kieffer. "My own concern is still whether resources are going to be put into the paper," he says. They debt they would take on could "necessitate the same kinds of financial constraints on the paper" that raised concerns about Tribune's management of the Times last year.
