"This is a generation who grew up with the world wide web," says
Stefano Hatfield, editor of
Rupert Murdoch's free paper, thelondonpaper. "They usually get their news delivered to them in their e-mail inboxes or at the click of a button. It is difficult to persuade young people that news should be something you pay for." He adds: "We're winning over new readers, so I don't think that will put pressure on the paid-for papers to lower their prices or go free."
