The request from regulators focuses on McClatchy's sale of four Knight Ridder papers -- the San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times, St. Paul Pioneer Press and Monterey County Herald -- to MediaNews. The timing may jeopardize McClatchy's plan to close the deal to buy KR and simultaneously sell the four papers, report Pete Carey and Chris O'Brien. The sale of KR to McClatchy is slated for 4 p.m. June 27.
