"Here I was a reporter who had an
opinion about the Iraq war, had voiced it privately to her friends and suddenly it was for public view," Wall Street Journal reporter
Farnaz Fassihi said at Columbia University. "I was caught in between; one side praised me for speaking the truth about the mess Iraq had become and the other side accused me of showing bias and demanded I be reassigned. The critics went as far as alleging that the newspaper had pulled me out of Iraq, when in fact I was on my scheduled rotation out of the country. To them I said, and still say, that journalists are not laptop computers. We are human beings and the events and stories we see and cover shape our opinions."
