Stanford University's
Center for the Study of the North American West is offering a $3500-$7000 two-week
fellowship for for western enterprise reporting. "The fellowship is meant for a reporter working on an important project in the West and will be used for anytime in the 2006-2007 academic year to visit Stanford and use resources and sources here, as well as for expenses incurred in reporting," read the Center's e-mail announcement.
I asked Jon Christensen of the Center whether independent, freelance, or citizen journalists would be eligible to apply -- even if the outlet for their reporting would be their own Web site or blog, or a citizen journalism venue such as YourHub or Backfence.
He replied, "They would certainly be welcome to apply. The fellowship awards will be decided on a case-by-case basis on their own merits. And we are all very much aware that the journalism landscape is changing."
Nice to see that such consideration is being extended to quality reporting that originates, and is published, outside mainstream news organizations.
Application deadline is May 1, 2006.
