How should news sites show up in search engines and news searches? And who should control what shows up?
The Associated Press recently reported on an effort to develop more comprehensive rules for access to news sites, called Automated Content Access Protocol (ACAP).
The AP story centers on a dispute over whether search engines should be allowed to link to news sites without paying. It quotes AP Chief Executive Tom Curley: "Free riding deprives AP of economic returns on its investments" in news coverage.
Note that AP recently signed a direct contract with Google to allow the display of its material through Google. Previously, Google linked to newspapers' content, even when stories were syndicated from AP.
