Floss your teeth, eat your vegetables, and read your print newspaper? No way, say bloggers. |
A couple of days ago, Poynter senior scholar
Roy Peter Clark caused a bit of a stir with his column,
Your Duty to Read the Paper. There, he laid down this controversial gauntlet: "I pose this challenge to you: It is your duty as a journalist and a citizen to read the newspaper -- emphasis on paper, not pixels."
So far that post has attracted 56 comments -- but that's not all there is to this discussion.
Several people posted responses or related thoughts on their own blogs. For instance, occasional Tidbits contributor Steve Yelvington called Clark A troll in scholar's clothing; Jossip.com characterizes Clark's plea as Guilt Will Save Journalism; and Cynthia Brumfield quipped, Eat Your Vegetables and Read a Newspaper.
Not surprisingly the blog buzz is mostly negative, even derisive. You can follow most blog posts commenting on Clark's missive via BlogPulse. There's also been some discussion of this piece on del.icio.us, and on Poynter's Online-News list.
I'll be chiming in over the weekend with a hopefully more nuanced perspective, probably on my weblog Contentious since it'll have broader implications than just the news biz.
