It's shocking: One post from a well-connected blog can skew your Google ranking for years. |
You want another example to illustrate why it is better not to ignore weblogs? Listen.
A few years ago, in a post on my weblog, I made fun of a colleague who was working for one of the world's major news outlets. He'd gotten the figures about the number of Chinese Internet users very wrong. It was a smallish subject and I had forgotten about it -- until I got an e-mail today with the request to, please, please, delete that post.
For two years, every time he Googled his name, my snarky entry showed up as the first result. His media organization must have employed busloads of search engine optimizers, but they were unable to get their media organization higher than my little weblog.
I have deleted the post, although it goes against my policy (and that of many bloggers) to not delete anything unless ordered by a court.
I wonder whether Google will be likewise merciful toward my colleague. I will check every now and then.
