ASU's J-school is up to a lot more than just building a new downtown campus.
The new Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship, due to open in August, will be "a laboratory where young people can come, explore ideas and develop new products that will make a difference," explains Christopher Callahan, Dean of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication at Arizona State Univ. A $552,000 Knight News Challenge grant is providing seed funding for this new effort.

With "digital natives" providing innovation and "digital immigrants" providing entrepreneurial experience, the Center will be a multi-disciplinary, collaborative effort between journalism students and students from business, computer engineering, design, and other fields.

Working closely with the New Media Innovation Lab established last year at the Cronkite School, the Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship will train journalists to use emerging technologies, new storytelling methods, and innovative ways of thinking about the news that can engage news consumers, build communities, and increase participation in democracy," said Callahan.

The Center is currently seeking a director. More details at Poynter's Career Center.

Guest contributor Leslie Rule is director of the Center for Locative Media.
