Training 75 Citizen Journalists in Chicago
Dougherty
newschallenge.org
Geoff Dougherty plans to have at least one trained citizen journalist in every Chicago neighborhood.
"Lots of dough for a formerly destitute non-profit news organization" -- so opens the Chi-Town Daily News article by editor Geoff Dougherty on how they're going to spend their $340,000 News Challenge grant. This independent local news site plans to recruit and train a network of 75 citizen journalists -- one in each Chicago neighborhood.

Dougherty's program attempts to meld the best of both worlds: community activism with journalistic principles of accuracy and objectivity to more deeply connect people to neighborhoods.

Universal Geotagging: Where Are You?

It's ambitious to try to redefine what a local news outlet might look like. News is as much embedded cultural knowledge as it is facts and figures, and this hybrid effort could help develop new and more responsive approaches to journalism.

If you're a Chicago resident and have ideas or want to participate, e-mail Dougherty.

Guest contributor Leslie Rule is the director of the Center for Locative Media. She also co-won a News Challenge grant with consultant Paul Lamb.
