The most common device used for gaming is a smartphone – it occupies 60% of the gaming market
The video game industry brought a record $ 43.4 billion in revenue in 2018 to the US, as consumers spend more on games than ever before. Entertainment content was responsible for the lion’s share of the income of 35.8 billion dollars, and the rest was game consoles, accessories and VR-helmets.
According to a recent study from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the video game industry trade Association in the US, 65% of American adults, or 164 million people, play video games.
The ESA found that three out of four Americans in the family have at least one gamer. Unsurprisingly, the most common device used for gaming is the smartphone, as 60% of adult gamers play on mobile devices. Almost half of adult gamers – 52% – play on personal computers, and game consoles are preferred by 49% of American adult gamers.
As for age, 21% of gamers are younger than 18 years. An encouraging study found that 90% of parents pay attention to the games their child plays, and 87% know about ESRB (Entertainment rating) and 77% regularly look at ESRB ratings when buying games for their children.
Also, video games increasingly capture the beautiful half of humanity: about 46% of all gamers — women, with their genre preferences are much more diverse than men, and more dependent on age.
Women between the ages of 18 and 34 play games such as Candy Crush, Assassin’s Creed and Tomb Raider, and are most often used to play smartphones, while men in the same age segment mostly play on consoles, in particular games such as God of War, Madden NFL and Fortnite. Older gamers aged 35 to 54 years prefer games such as Tetris and Pac-Man — for women, Call of Duty, Forza and NBA 2K — for men. Men between the ages of 55 and 64 like to play Solitaire and Scrabble, while women like to play Mahjong and Monopoly.
The report also breaks one of the popular myths about video game lovers. So, gamers were no more inclined than other Americans to live an isolated and sedentary life. Moreover, if you look at travel, Hiking and exercise, the statistics of gamers is slightly higher than that of non-playing Americans.
“The games have become an important part of American culture. This makes them the leading form of entertainment today,” says ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis.
